    – Why is being believed such a powerful step in healing?

    – What does it mean to move from silence to thriving?

    – What does silence mean to you? How do shame and self-blame reinforce silence?

    – What parts of these stories feel familiar, similar, or relatable in your own life — even if your circumstances are different?

Being believed is being validated. It is someone from the outside validating your hurt and pain, in a compassionate, safe space, no judgement. It helps to dissolve any self doubt in the questions surrounding the events (Did I cause this somehow? Did I disassociate from the pain in order to compartmentalize and function and survive?)

The goal in one’s life is always to move from holding in hurt and pain (silence) to thriving! Speaking out is the first step and a very big one. It also can be very empowering, and perhaps your story could save a life!

Shame and self blame reinforce silence for sure, and that is understandable how and why that happens to victims of abuse, especially if the abuse happens at a young age. There may be such confusion around the event(s) that it could take years to sort it out, as we try to understand and put words to the complexities of trauma and emotions, and that is well before we even begin the healing process!

In trauma-informed work we have a saying that “if you name it, you can tame it” and that has proven right in my experience. Thank you for sharing your experience and shouting healing from the rooftops of the islands and beyond. ☮
