Benevolent Childhood Experiences (BCE) SURVEY

The BCE Survey was developed by Dr. Angela Narayan and colleagues at Denver University to measure how much exposure a person had to positive and protective experiences in childhood. These are the kinds of experiences that support resilience, healing, and growth — even when adversity was present.

Did you have beliefs that gave you comfort (such as faith, values, or spiritual traditions)?
Did you like school?
Did you have at least one teacher who cared about you?

Was there an adult (other than your parent) you could trust when you needed help?
Did you have opportunities to have fun and enjoy yourself (hobbies, sports, play)?
Did you feel comfortable with yourself (a sense of self-acceptance)?

Did you have enough nutritious food to eat?
Did you have access to medical care when you needed it?
Did you live in housing that felt safe and stable?
Did you spend time outdoors or in nature?
Did you feel treated fairly regardless of your race, culture, or identity?
Did you have at least one sibling, cousin, or peer you felt close to?
Did you have chances to participate in community, sports, or cultural activities?
Did you feel accepted for who you are at home?
Did you have an adult encourage your interests or talents?
Did you have opportunities to learn new skills or take on responsibilities?
